April Garden Update

４月のガーデン報告


Good morning! This is how it looked like in our back yard this morning.
We literally live in the woods. Green, green, everything is getting so green! It's just such a nice season to spend time outside... until the mosquitoes come out!

おはようございます！今朝のバックヤードの様子です。
私たちは実際、林の中に住んでるようなものなので、周りは緑だらけになってます。外で過ごすには今がちょうどいい季節。そうこうしているうちに今度は蚊の季節がすぐ来ますからねぇ〜。。。



The bees are working hard already. There are lots of them, but they don't bother me so I don't mind them.

たくさんのミツバチたちがすでに働いてます。こっちが何もしなければ何もしないので、別に私は構いません〜。



The big patches of clovers growing so quickly. Once I wanted all nice looking turf with no weeds in our yard, but gave it up. I don't see these clovers as weeds anymore. They want to grow so let them grow!  They are "eco turf" that covers our sloped ground to prevent erosion. Our bunnies love to eat, too. And, they attract pollinator. I should definitely start beekeeping here (maybe next year?).

クローバーが年々わんさかと増えてあちこちに生えてます。キレイな雑草のない芝生の庭に憧れたこともありましたが、、もう諦めましたね。クローバーはもう雑草とは思ってません。生えたいんだったら生やしとけ！って感じですか（笑）。芝の代わりになる”エコ芝生”とも呼ばれるんですよ、うちの坂になった地面を覆ってくれるので土壌侵食も防いでくれます。バニーたちも食べるの好きだし、受粉を助けるハチもたくさん寄せ付けます。ミツバチ養蜂を始めるのにちょうどいいよなぁ（多分来年から？）



First roses of this year blooming...

今年最初のバラも咲き始め・・・


Since last post, most of the seed I planted started sprouting. There were a couple of  kinds didn't sprout at all or died because of the too much heat exposure (my fault!). But, overall this is not bad.
And, last week I transplanted them in the garden beds. This year I needed more room so I also added this planter instead of digging ground:

前回の記事からしばらくたってますが、蒔いた種はだいたいが発芽しました。２、３種類全然芽を出さなかったのや、日照りが暑すぎて死んでしまったのがあったけど（私のせい）。でも全体的にはまあ悪くなかったと思います。
そして先週、だいたいはガーデンベッドに移植しました。今年もまた植える場所が足りなくなったので、地面を掘る代わりにこんなものをこしらえました。



I built this just following the plan and instruction I found on a website. 

ウェブサイトで作り方を見つけたので、それ通りに従って組み立てました。



I love this raised bed! I'll probably build another one maybe next year.
Every year the kinds of lettuce and green leafy veggies are eaten by bugs a lot. This bed is higher than ground level so hopefully the bugs can't find them easily...

このプランターとっても気に入ってます。多分来年またもう一つ作るかも。
毎年、葉物野菜はすぐ虫に食べられがちですが、、、これなら地面から高さがあるので、虫にも見つかりにくいんじゃないかな〜、とちょっと期待。



Peas are easy so I like it but takes so much room for just a little amount of yield... Broccoli and Romain lettuce were the plants I bought. But, they are not doing good... it seems getting too warm for cool season veggies like these.

グリーンピースは簡単だけど、ちょっとしか実がならない割には場所をとります。ブロッコリーとロメインレタスは買ってきた苗を植えてみたけど、あまり成長が思わしくない。冷涼の気候を好むものにはもうここは暑すぎるかも。やっぱりダメだな。



The bugs are already eating the leaves of daikons, turnips, and radishes :( but not carrots. The carrot's top (leaves) actually taste good! It's yummy when you make tempura with it.

大根、かぶ、ラディッシュなどの葉はすでに虫食いがひどいけど、人参には来ません。虫は嫌いみたいだけど、人参の葉っぱ美味しいですよねぇ〜、天ぷらにして食べるぞー！
